If you love cats and donโt mind places that feel a little rough around the edges, Cat Beach Penang is worth a stop. Hidden beside the sea in Teluk Bahang in the northwest of the island, this volunteer-run cat sanctuary is home to a large number of stray and rescued cats.
It is not a polished tourist attraction or modern cafรฉ-style cat experience; instead, it is rustic, a little chaotic, and full of personality. For animal lovers, that is part of the charm, and it makes a great addition to any Penang off the beaten track itinerary.

Where is Cat Beach?
Cat Beach is located in Teluk Bahang, on the northwest coast of Penang Island, just a 10 minute walk from the main entrance to Penang National Park.
It sits in a quieter seaside area, away from the main road, so using Grab to get there is usually the easiest option. Although the 101 and 102 bus stops on the main road just 500 metres away.

Opening Times and entry fee
Cat Beach is open daily from 9.00am to sunset. But as Cat Beach is volunteer led, these times aren’t set in stone.
Admission is by donation of funds (RM10 per person recommended, cash / TnG only) or food.

What to Expect
It is best to arrive with realistic expectations. Cat Beach is not spotless or manicured, and parts of the site can feel rather run-down and unkempt. This is a rescue space first and foremost, not a commercial attraction.
There are cats everywhere; lounging in corners, wandering around the grounds, climbing over structures, or waiting patiently for food. Watch where you walk as there’s often a cat placed right by your foot. Some of the cats are incredibly sweet and affectionate, while others look a little rough around the edges or prefer to keep their distance.

Visitors are usually handed cat food on arrival so they can feed the cats after a donation has been made. This is one sachet of cat food per person.
If you love cats and do not mind a scruffier environment, you may find the place charming. If you prefer polished attractions, it may not be for you.

Volunteering at Cat Beach
If you message ahead on WhatsApp, there may be opportunities to volunteer your time during your visit.
One simple way to help is by bringing materials to make toys or enrichment items for the cats. Useful items include:
- Kitchen towel or toilet tissue cardboard tubes – ideal for puzzle feeders
- Clean old socks -great cuddle toys
- Balls of any kind
- Buttons or dangling craft items
- Feathers
- Sticks to tie feathers or soft items onto for cats to chase
How Long Should You Stay?
This depends entirely on how much you like cats.
Many visitors stay for around 15 minutes, feed a few cats, take some photos, and continue their day. Dedicated cat lovers may happily stay for several hours.

What to Combine With Your Visit
Cat Beach is best visited as part of a wider day out in the area. Nearby attractions include:
- Penang National Park
- Entopia Butterfly Farm
- Tropical Spice Garden
- Tropical Fruit Farm
- Batu Ferringhi for food or sundowners
Final Thoughts
Cat Beach is one of Penangโs quirkiest places to visit. It is scruffy, heartfelt, and full of rescued cats needing care and attention.
It will not appeal to everyone, but visitors who appreciate animal welfare projects and offbeat experiences may find it a worthwhile stop.
