Halloween in Penang 2026: What’s On Around the Island

Halloween in Penang

Halloween isn’t a particularly big celebration in Penang, and if you’re expecting streets full of trick-or-treating children, elaborate house decorations and Halloween events everywhere you turn, you might be disappointed.

That said, Halloween is definitely acknowledged here. Horror and gore seem to be far more readily accepted in Malaysia than you might expect, which is quite a contrast to the generally gentle nature of Malaysians. Horror films regularly dominate cinema listings, and we’ve even been to the cinema with our tween boys to see a PG-13 film only to discover that some of the trailers beforehand were advertising surprisingly graphic horror films.

So while Halloween itself isn’t huge, there are still ways to get into the spooky spirit if you’re in Penang in October.

Is there trick or treating in Penang?

Not really, at least not in the traditional sense.

Trick-or-treating tends to happen within the expat community, particularly in condominiums where parents organise Halloween activities for the children. Schools may also hold Halloween parties or themed events, but these are generally for pupils rather than something visitors can join.

That can make Halloween a little tricky to access if you’re visiting Penang with children and don’t already know other families here.

Fortunately, there are other ways to get your Halloween fix.

Trick or treating in Penang

Where to buy Halloween decorations and treats

If you want to create your own Halloween celebration, Penang’s supermarkets usually have a surprisingly good selection of Halloween goodies.

Jaya Grocer and Sam’s Groceria stock Halloween decorations, sweets and other seasonal bits and pieces in the run-up to 31st October.

For cheap decorations, masks and other Halloween accessories, head to DAISO, the Japanese discount shop. There are branches at both Gurney Plaza and Gurney Paragon.

Need a pumpkin?

Pumpkins are available in Penang, but finding a large, carving-sized orange pumpkin isn’t guaranteed. If you can’t track one down, a watermelon makes a surprisingly good substitute for a Halloween lantern, and is considerably easier to find!

Where to buy Halloween costumes in Penang

For a proper costume, Lazada is probably the easiest option, particularly if you’re after something specific. Just order well in advance, as some items are shipped from China and delivery can take a while.

Alternatively, Balloon Wonderland Penang on the lower floor of Gurney Paragon has a selection of costumes and Halloween accessories.

Halloween events and activities in Penang 2026

There aren’t loads of dedicated Halloween events on the island, but there are a few options worth knowing about.

1. Pumpkin Decor Battle at Straits Quay

Get creative at Straits Quay’s Pumpkin Decor Battle on Saturday 24th October.

Participants can either carve their pumpkin or decorate the outside, with teams of two competing from 3pm to 5pm. Registration opens at 2.30pm at the Main Lobby.

There are cash vouchers and hampers up for grabs, and every participant receives an RM20 Sam’s Groceria voucher when they register.

2. Haunted Apothecary at Straits Quay

Straits Quay is also getting into the Halloween spirit on the big night itself with Haunted Apothecary.

The evening includes a lucky draw, bubble performance, best-dressed competition and sticky puzzle hunt, along with other spooky surprises.

3. Umi Umi After Dark: Survive the Night

For older teenagers and adults Umi Umi After Dark: Survive the Night offers something considerably more sinister.

It’s an immersive evening of magic and horror rather than a traditional Halloween party, so it’s better suited to older kids and adults who actually enjoy being scared.

4. Halloween by the Pool at Ascott Gurney Penang

If you’re after something a little more polished than pumpkin carving, Ascott Gurney is hosting a Halloween buffet by the pool on 31st October. There’ll be live music, Halloween games, a lucky draw and best-dressed competitions, with a buffet dinner and welcome drink included. There’s also an optional free-flow beer and wine package.

Adults: RM168+
Children: RM88+
Under 6: Free

There’s a 20% early-bird discount for adults who pay by 25th October, or a Buy 3 Get 1 Free offer for adults, although the two offers can’t be combined.

5. Visit the Ghost Museum

Penang Ghost Museum

There doesn’t appear to be a specific Halloween event at Ghost Museum Penang for 2026, but Halloween is arguably the perfect excuse to visit.

This three-storey museum is full of ghoulish models, scary stories and realistic zombie rooms. It’s a world away from what you’d normally experience in George Town and makes for a suitably spooky afternoon.

Be warned, though: the Zombie Room on the top floor is particularly scary and isn’t somewhere we’d recommend taking young children.

6. Try Zombie Outbreak at The TOP

If zombies are your thing, head to The TOP Penang and its Zombie Outbreak attraction.

It’s not a special Halloween event, but it certainly fits the theme and gives older kids and teenagers another opportunity to get their scare fix while visiting George Town.

7. Go to the cinema

If you’re in Penang around Halloween, check what’s playing at the cinema.

GSC at Gurney Plaza and TGV at Gurney Paragon regularly have horror films on their listings, and October is no exception. There are usually supernatural horrors, thrillers and considerably more gruesome offerings alongside the usual blockbusters.

It’s actually one of the things that surprised us most when we first moved to Malaysia. Horror is very much part of mainstream cinema here, and the trailers can be very graphic.

Want to go big for Halloween? Head to KL

If you’re after a proper Halloween fright rather than a few spooky activities in Penang, it might be worth timing a trip to Kuala Lumpur around Halloween.

Sunway Lagoon’s Nights of Fright returns for its 12th year in 2026, running every Friday to Sunday from 25th September to 7th November.

Klook.com

The event includes eight haunted houses, 11 rides, three scare zones, a show stage and various activity booths. It is rated 13+ and is designed around genuine scares, so this is one for teenagers and adults rather than young children.

Sunway Lagoon is in Bandar Sunway, so this isn’t a quick day trip from Penang. If you’re already planning to visit KL, however, it could be a good way to turn a regular city break into a Halloween weekend.

Make your own Halloween in Penang

Halloween in Penang isn’t really about knocking on strangers’ doors for sweets. Unless you’re part of an expat community or have children at a school holding a Halloween event, you’ll need to make your own Halloween fun.

Pick up some decorations at DAISO, grab Halloween sweets from one of the supermarkets, order costumes from Lazada and have your own Halloween night. Or head to Straits Quay for the pumpkin competition and Halloween evening, visit the Ghost Museum, catch a scary film at the cinema or, if the kids are old enough, go looking for some proper scares.

Halloween might not be huge in Penang, but there are enough spooky options to make 31st October fun.
