Batu Ferringhi Iron Waterfall: how to get there and what to expect

Only a fifteen minute walk (630 metres) from the main road in Batu Ferringhi, the Iron Waterfall might seem close but it feels a world away from the tourism of the resorts and beaches. Very few tourists know about this beautiful spot and chances are you’ll have it all to yourself. Indeed it features on our guide to Penang off-the-beaten track.

Batu Ferringhi Iron Waterfall derives its name from the reddish hue of its water and rocks, which are attributed to a high concentration of iron in the water. It’s a beautiful contrast to the lush green of the surrounding vegetation.

The track to the waterfall is relatively flat and easy-going with only the very last section (40 metres) along a muddy path and a few upward steps. However, be cautious when crossing the bridge, as there are often territorial dogs in the area. While they might appear aggressive, simply keep walking, and they’ll leave you alone once you’ve moved further along the path.

Getting to the start of the Batu Ferringhi Iron Waterfall walk

The walk starts from this point, next to Kafe Vsassy.

The easiest way to get to the start point is by Grab taxi.

Alternatively, several buses (101 and 102) go through Batu Ferringhi on their way to and from George Town and Penang National Park. If coming from George Town, the bus can drop you off outside Ferringhi Villas, only a 50 metre walk to the start point.

If you’re in your own vehicle, there is space to park your car at the start point. Although if you are arriving later in the afternoon / evening, it’s likely that these spaces will be full.

Can you swim at Batu Ferringhi Iron Waterfall?

Even after heavy rain towards the end of the rainy season, the waterfall and pools aren’t deep enough to swim in. But by all means take you shoes off and enjoy the cooling waters with a paddle.

Do be careful climbing up the rocks and walking around the waterfall as the rocks are very slippery.

Route instructions

1. With Kafe Vsassy on your left, take the track that leads into the rainforest, away from the main road. The track is flat and very easy-going.

2. Always continue straight ahead.

3. 500 metres along the track from the start point, the track veers to the left across a bridge, over the river. Be mindful of territorial dogs here, they can seem rather aggressive. Just keep walking and they won’t bother you once you’re further along the path.

4. After the bridge, continue on the track to the right. Here the track narrows and can be muddy. There’s also a slight incline. But keep going, you’re almost there. You will be able to hear the waterfall.

5. 130 metres on from the bridge, up a few steps, you will arrive at Batu Ferringhi Iron Waterfall.

6. When you’re ready, retrace your footsteps back to the main road. We then very much recommend enjoying some roti canai from Kafe Vsassy. If you want to then explore more of this region of the island, check out our guide for things to do in Batu Ferringhi for inspiration.
