Kapitan Keling Mosque: a guide for non-Muslim visitors

Kapitan Keling Mosque

The stretch of road in George Town, starting from Malay Central Mosque Lebuh Acheh and running all the way to St. Georgeโ€™s Anglican Church, has to be one of the most religiously diverse streets in the world, with a mix of temples, mosques, and churches. It is often referred to as the Street of Harmony.

Halfway along is Kapitan Keling Mosque, the largest mosque in George Town, built in the 19th century by Indian Muslim traders. The mosque is named after Caudeer Mohideen Merican, popularly known as Kapitan Keling, the leader of the Indian Muslim community during the early 19th century.

Non-Muslim visitor information to Kapitan Keling Mosque

Outside of prayer times, non-Muslims are allowed inside Kapitan Keling Mosque. This is unusual for many mosques around the world and makes it well worth taking the opportunity to visit.

Daily visiting hours for non-Muslims are:

  • 11am to 1pm
  • 2pm to 4:30pm
  • 5pm to 6pm

Please note that on Fridays, the mosque is only open to non-Muslims from 2pm to 6pm. These times may also change during Ramadan.

Visitors are asked to behave respectfully at all times; keep voices low and follow the guidance of mosque staff. Photography is generally allowed in visitor areas, but it is best to ask before taking photos, especially if worshippers are present.

Visitor access inside

Visitors are directed to walk to the left inside the building, following a route that leads to the washing area used before prayer. Access to the central prayer space and the prayer mats is not permitted.

Only a small area is accessible to non-Muslims, but even with limited access, visitors can appreciate the calm atmosphere and architectural details of one of George Townโ€™s most important religious buildings.

A short visit fits easily into the self-guided George Town walking tour and requires little advance planning beyond checking visiting hours.
