This guide has been updated for January 2027.
Penang in January is one of the most popular months to visit the island, although peak season means there will be crowds to contend with at the more popular sights and attractions.
January is perhaps the perfect time to visit Penang. The rainy season is a distant memory and the long days are characterised by clear blue skies and (relatively) comfortable temperatures. This glorious weather brings out the island’s most attractive side, making it the perfect time to explore the rainforests, beaches and Andaman Sea.
At least one of Penangโs two major festivals, Chinese New Year or Thaipusam, typically falls in January. In 2027, Thaipusam takes place on Friday 22nd January, while Chinese New Year falls in February. During Thaipusam, roads are closed for the processions and pilgrims, and the island becomes extremely busy. However, it is one of the most extraordinary festivals in the world to witness.

Penang weather in January
January is the sweet spot for weather in Penang, safely beyond the rainy season but still a couple of months away from the truly hot months of March and April. Most days will begin with a picture-perfect sunrise over the mainland before the blue skies and crisp light take over for the rest of the day, with temperatures hovering around 30โฏยฐC.
An occasional thunderstorm or spell of rain isn’t unheard of but, on the whole, you can safely plan outdoor activities and some beach time at Batu Ferringhi. Many other visitors will have the same idea, so the large resorts and beach bars will be busy during the day, with the best sunset-viewing locations also likely to be much sought-after.

Is Penang busy in January?
Yes, January is classed as peak tourist season in Penang, so you can expect the island to be busy, especially around Thaipusam (22nd January).
Visitors from Western Europe and Australasia make up a significant chunk of the tourists, especially the latter group who have their main school holidays during this period. Local and international schools have gone back after a long break in December, but there are still plenty of tourists from Asia, particularly China, Japan and South Korea. You should brace yourself for long immigration queues at Penang International Airport, which is currently undergoing much-needed expansion works.
It’s also prime cruise season and with Penang being one of the most popular slots on any itinerary, the cruise terminal in George Town will be a hive of activity. If you’re arriving to the island on a cruise, make sure you check out our guide to Penang cruise port.

Penang festivals and events in January
READ OUR GUIDE: Festivals in Penang
January is a busy month in Penang, shaped by major religious festivals and preparations for Chinese New Year.
While Thaipusam and Chinese New Year often both fall in January, in 2027 only Thaipusam takes place during the month. Chinese New Year falls in February, but preparations begin weeks earlier. Come early January, red lanterns are already strung across streets and shopfronts, particularly in George Town, as the island gears up for its biggest annual celebration.
The main event in January 2027 is Thaipusam, which falls on 22nd January in 2027. This major Hindu festival is dedicated to Lord Murugan and involves long processions, drumming, chanting, and acts of devotion, including the carrying of elaborate kavadi structures through the streets of George Town and up to the Waterfall Hilltop Temple. It is a powerful cultural event to witness, and respectful visitors are welcome to observe.
READ OUR GUIDE: Thaipusam in Penang

Thaipusam brings very large crowds, especially overnight and into the morning of the festival. Expect widespread road closures and significant traffic disruption around central George Town and Jalan Kebun Bunga. Accommodation books up early, public transport may be limited, and walking is often the most practical way to get around.
Is January a good time to visit Penang?
Thereโs no doubt that January is a fantastic month to visit Penang. The weather is generally cooler and drier than other times of the year, with bright blue skies pretty much every day.
January is also festival season. In 2027, Thaipusam takes place, offering an incredible cultural experience. However, it brings very large crowds, road closures, and traffic disruption in key areas, including George Town and Jalan Kebun Bunga. Hotels fill up quickly, and public transport can be limited during the festival.
With a little planning (booking accommodation early, allowing extra travel time, and deciding whether to witness Thaipusam) you can enjoy the energy, colour, and unique experiences Penang has to offer. Festivals add excitement rather than inconvenience, and January remains one of the best months to visit Penang at its most vibrant and lively.
