Penang in May: is it a good time to visit?

Little India, George Town, Penang

May in Penang marks the shift into the islandโ€™s mini-rainy season, when the weather becomes heavier, more humid, and heat warnings are not uncommon. Clear days are rare and the sky is almost always layered with cloud. Mornings often begin with a milky, diffused light, while evenings bring thunderous skies, sometimes with lightening and no rain. This is still not the main rainy season, but it is the start of a more unsettled and dramatic tropical rhythm.

There are no big festivals or school holidays in May, so it is a quieter time for visitors. Due to the humidity, early mornings and late evenings become the most comfortable times to be outdoors, while midday is best reserved for shade, swimming pools, or air-conditioned spaces.

Penang weather in May

Along with April, May is one of the hottest and most humid months in Penang, with temperatures regularly reaching 33โ€“34ยฐC and very little relief from the heat during the day. In fact, it often feels significantly hotter due to the high humidity. We’ve had warning notifications on our phone during May saying that the temperature feels like 41ยฐC.

Skies are rarely cloudless, with mornings typically beginning under a hazy, milky light that gradually thickens into heavier cloud cover as the day progresses. By late afternoon, storm clouds often gather and threaten sudden downpours, although these do not always fully materialise.

This is very much typical tropical weather.

Is Penang busy in May?

May is generally a quieter month for tourism in Penang. The Easter travel period has ended, and there are no school holidays or major festivals, which means visitor numbers are lower compared to earlier in the year. But this is Penang, one of Malaysia’s most popular tourist destinations, so there will always be a buzz of visitors, especially around George Town.

Penang festivals and events in May

May is typically a quiet month for festivals in Penang, although the 1st May is notably a public holiday for Labour Day. Many shops, offices and factories are closed on this day, although malls will be open (and busy). It’s a busy weekend for domestic tourists.

There is also Vesak Day, which falls in May. In 2026 it was on the 1st May and in 2027 it’s on the 20th May. This is an important Buddhist celebration that commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Buddha. Temples across the island hold ceremonies, prayers, and offerings, with the most notable celebrations at Kek Lok Si Temple.

Is May a good time to visit Penang?

May can still be a good time to visit Penang if you can manage and be flexible with heat, humidity, and changeable skies. Outdoor activities are best done in the early morning when the air is slightly lighter and afternoons are best spent by the pool or enjoying indoor activities, and evenings are ideal for food experiences once the heat begins to ease and any potential downpours have passed.
