It is also a popular month for European travellers exploring Southeast Asia, as destinations north of Malaysia, including Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and northern Vietnam, are in their rainy season.

The main caveat is haze. During prolonged dry periods, land-clearing and peat fires in Indonesia, particularly on Sumatra and Kalimantan, can send thick smoke across the Straits of Malacca to Penang, affecting air quality.

Penang weather in August

August is hot and humid in Penang, with daytime temperatures typically around 31-33°C.

It is one of the drier periods of the year, so clear blue-sky days are more common than earlier in the year (April–May). It is not usually as consistently dry as January and February, though, and heavy tropical downpours can still arrive suddenly.

These downpours can actually be welcome, cooling the island and often clearing the air when haze is present.

Haze in Penang in August

Haze is the big uncertainty when visiting Penang in August. During the Southwest Monsoon, winds can carry smoke from land-clearing and peat fires in Indonesia, particularly Sumatra, across the Straits of Malacca.

This can vary dramatically between years. August 2025 gave us plenty of clear blue skies and some fantastic days out hiking, while August 2026 has brought some of the most persistent haze we’ve experienced in Penang, with many mornings covered in a milky layer of pollution. Drier conditions associated with El Niño have also increased concerns about fires and haze across the region in 2026.

If you are planning outdoor activities, it is worth checking the air quality as well as the weather forecast. Look particularly at the PM2.5 reading, which measures fine particles in the air and is usually the main pollutant during haze episodes. If the readings are high, you may want to change plans and consider some of the indoor activities that Penang offers.

Is Penang busy in August?

August is a popular month for international visitors, particularly Europeans travelling during the summer holidays. Much of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and northern Vietnam are in their rainy season, making Malaysia an attractive option for travellers looking for generally drier weather.

International schools are on their long summer holidays, while Malaysian government schools are still in term for most of August.

Penang is still quieter than during major holiday periods such as Chinese New Year and Christmas, although the island can become busier around the end-of-August Merdeka celebrations.

Penang festivals and events in August

George Town Festival takes place from 1st to 9th August 2026, bringing a packed programme of theatre, music, dance, visual arts and performances to venues across George Town. Check the George Town Festival programme before your visit, as there are events throughout the festival period, including plenty suitable for families.

In 2026, Maulidur Rasul, the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, is also a public holiday on 25th August.

Merdeka Day, Malaysia’s National Day, takes place on 31st August and is a public holiday. Expect celebrations and decorations around the island in the run-up to the day, and fireworks until late at night on the evening before.

Is August a good time to visit Penang?

August can be a great time to visit Penang, particularly if you want hot weather, more frequent sunny days and a good chance of clear skies. However, it is still tropical weather, so pack for both sunshine and heavy rain. The bigger consideration is haze, which can range from barely noticeable to seriously unpleasant depending on conditions from year to year. 2026 has been a particularly bad year for haze.

For the best experience, keep an eye on both the weather and air quality forecasts. And remember that a tropical downpour can be a good thing; it might just clear the haze and leave you with beautiful blue skies afterwards.
