The BEST spas in Penang: from luxury resorts to wallet-friendly massages

Penang offers a diverse spa scene, from high-end treatments at beachfront resorts in Batu Ferringhi to simple, budget-friendly massages.

Whether you’re craving a luxurious escape or a simple, rejuvenating massage, Penang has a spa to suit every budget. From poolside pampering at five-star resorts in Batu Ferringhi and treatment rooms with panoramic views from George Town, to unassuming floor-mattress spots in Tanjung Tokong, treatments here range from high-end wellness experiences to no-frills local favourites.

This is a personal selection of my favourites (Jenny writing this; I’m the one genuinely obsessed with massages), chosen for consistency, atmosphere, and overall experience. While Penang has plenty of good options, quality can vary more than you might expect; from unexpected card fees to treatments that feel rushed or overly clinical.

Also, please bear in mind that price isn’t always a reliable indicator of quality. Higher-end spas tend to focus on ambiance and a more polished experience, rather than necessarily delivering better treatments. And in all honesty, the cheaper spas in this guide are the ones I return to time and time again.

Most spas operate by appointment only, and while some high-end spas allow online booking, most require a WhatsApp message at least a day in advance to secure your slot.

There are two Java Spas in Penang. One is tucked in the residential area of Tanjung Bungah, and the other in Jelutong, south of George Town.

I’ve only been to the Tanjung Bungah branch, and it’s honestly one of the best massage experiences I’ve had in Malaysia. Staff are trained in Indonesian massage technique and first-time customers get a 30% reduction on a full body massage. If you find yourself wanted to return, there is a fantastic deal where you pay RM588 for an 8hour package, which includes aromatherapy massages, hot stone massages, Thai herbal compress, and even a vaginal spa (not something I’ve personally tried!).

This is one of the best value spa options in Penang. Please note that both branches are closed on a Tuesday.

2. Rock Spa at Hard Rock, Batu Ferringhi

Rock Spa is a high-end retreat located next to the swimming pool at Hard Rock Hotel, with views of the beach that set the scene for total relaxation. Treatments here combine luxury and professionalism, making it perfect for a pampering session. Ideal for those wanting a resort-style spa experience in Batu Ferringhi.

3. Carezone, Tanjung Tokong

Carezone is a no-frills massage spot in the Vantage building, Tajung Tokong. Despite its basic setup, with treatments on a mattress on the floor, the Thai massages are excellent, professional, and incredibly affordable. Perfect for budget-conscious travellers seeking a skilled, straightforward massage without any extras.

A full body massage for 90 mins with oil costs RM105. This is the spot I return to time and time again.

4. Thai Odyssey, Straits Quay

When I first stepped into Thai Odyssey, I was handed oversized pyjamas to get changed into, and I have to admit, I was a little unsure what was going on. I had booked a Traditional Thai Massage and expected the usual oil-based treatment, but this was something different.

The 90-minute session involved no oil at all. Instead, the therapist used acupressure, joint mobilisation, deep muscle compression, and a series of yoga-like stretches to release trapped energy, increase range of motion, reduce fatigue, and improve sleep quality. It was utterly incredible!

There’s often an early bird discount if you visit before 3pm and unusually, bookings are made online rather than via WhatsApp. I’ve only been to the Straits Quay outlet, but there are also branches in George Town and Gurney Paragon Mall. Thai Odyssey is a well-known brand across Peninsular Malaysia.

The Straits Quay location is on the first floor above Rockafellers. To get there, take the escalator up from the main building and walk around to find the entrance.

5. Island Wellness Spa, George Town

Island Wellness Spa is tucked away at the top of a walk-up staircase, on the right-hand side. Its quiet, intimate setting makes it ideal for a deeply relaxing massage. The focus is on skilful, calming treatments rather than frills, offering a peaceful escape from the bustle of George Town. All treatment sessions begin with a relaxing foot wash, before you are lead into the small and basic treatment room, which just includes a massage bed.

Tower Spa offers one of the most unique spa experiences in Penang, occupying the 67th floor of Komtar with uninterrupted views across Penang Hill. The location is undoubtedly the star of the show, with floor-to-ceiling windows ensuring the scenery remains part of the experience from start to finish.

We enjoyed the Only You couple package, which includes a rose-petal foot ritual and 90-minute massage. The massage was professionally delivered, although firmer than expected, even at standard pressure. The treatment rooms are also much brighter than a typical spa, creating a more open feel that keeps those spectacular views front and centre.
